How to convert decimal hours to minutes

Keep the whole number as hours, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes.

Minutes = decimal part × 60 7.75 hours → 7 hours + 0.75 × 60 = 7 hours 45 minutes 8.6 hours → 8 hours + 0.6 × 60 = 8 hours 36 minutes

Worked example: a paystub shows 76.35 regular hours for two weeks

  1. Whole hours: 76.
  2. 0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes.
  3. So 76.35 hours is 76 hours 21 minutes — not 76 hours 35 minutes.

Why payroll uses decimal hours

Pay is a rate per hour, so it's easiest to multiply by a single number: 7.75 hours × $20 = $155. Hours and minutes like 7:45 have to be converted first. That's why timesheets and paystubs show decimals — and why it's worth converting them back when you want to check your hours against your own records. To go the other way, use the minutes to decimal converter.
