How to convert minutes to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.
Worked example: a 38 hour 20 minute week at $17.00 an hour
- 20 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.333…, so the week is 38.33 hours.
- Pay: 38.33 × $17.00 = $651.61. (Using the exact fraction, 38⅓ × $17.00 = $651.67 — payroll systems usually round to two decimal places first.)
- The common mistake is writing 38.20 hours, which would pay $649.40.

Rounding to tenths or quarter hours
Some payroll systems record time in tenths of an hour (6-minute blocks) or quarter hours (15-minute blocks) instead of exact minutes. Federal rules allow rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter hour as long as it averages out over time and employees are paid for all the time they actually work.
