How to convert a salary to an hourly rate
Divide the yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard full-time job that's 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks).
Worked example: a $60,000 salary
- At 40 hours a week: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
- At 50 hours a week: $60,000 ÷ 2,600 = $23.08 an hour — the real rate drops when salaried hours go up.
- Per paycheck: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69 biweekly, or $5,000 a month.

Salaried vs hourly: what changes
Hourly employees are paid for every hour they work, plus overtime over 40 a week if they're non-exempt. Many salaried employees are "exempt" and get the same pay however many hours they work, so working 50 hours instead of 40 lowers their effective hourly rate by 20%. Being paid a salary doesn't automatically make someone exempt, though: the job also has to meet a salary threshold and the duties tests in the federal rules. Read more in how overtime works.

Should I use 2,080 or 2,000 hours?
